What Does Winchester parts Mean?



In the event the “WP” evidence was an indicator of Winchesters subjection of the barrel or receiver to proved testing, why wouldn’t the “WP” appear along With all the “Oval P”?

Receivers without the “WP” proof but have barrels While using the “WP” proof fall into that time period from 1905-1908 where the barrel could possess the “WP” proof but the receiver will not likely.

This thread has become a terrific support and it has place my brain at simplicity with regard towards the proof markings with Shotgun shells a Product 1894 which I'm at the moment restoring.

Based upon what I have observed and read in other resources, the oval (P) evidence mark was not introduced until eventually 1908. Prior to that time, Winchester marked “OF” (exterior fitted) on the bottom with the barrel beneath the forend stock to the mail get barrels. I've see a number of of these on Model 1885 Single Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
